In a move of pure PRing & politrix with very little substance, Dianne Feinstein, the bumbling idiot senator from California, tried to make the resale of inauguration tickets a federal crime. Of all the issues to spend her oh so valuable time on, she does the one to grab headlines instead of, you know, focusing on important things like the recession and the Iraq War.
Classic government incompetence has already led to Inauguration tickets being removed from reputable sites like Stubhub and Ticketnetwork, which provided safe, 100% guaranteed ways for people to purchase tickets. Instead, a black market will form and counterfeit tickets are going to be an even worse problem.
“What has not happened in previous inaugurals is the extent of ticket scalping at astronomical prices that is now occurring, spurred on by the huge demand and proliferation of internet sites. Senator Feinstein believes these sales need to be stopped.”
PROTIP for the Todd Homme-needing Senator: When demand exceeds supply, prices go up. I don’t know why people have so much trouble understanding this, but the issue repeats itself over and over again. Just like Tulip Bulbs. It’d be a much more embarassing situation if people were giving away inauguration tickets because no one wanted to go (hey, did Bush get reelected?).
Yeah, I get it – selling tickets to such a fabled ceremony looks bad. Fine – require two forms of ID from everyone (no exceptions) when they pick up the tickets. Or require the name on the tickets (if applicable) to match the ID. It isn’t hard. Making ticket resale a federal crime is the epitome of an overreaction. Sort of like that whole Patriot Act thing. Sarbanes Oxley too.
Luckily, Feistein’s legistlation failed. And ironically, one of the major hold ups was due to the Inaugural Committee providing tickets to people who “donated” funds. Donated? Paid? Buying? What difference does it make – it’s all just Washington DC shit kicking.
