Changes in industry and economy have ticket executives cautious about 2009

With the economy in turmoil, the ticket industry will need to band together and look at ways to continue to forge relationships and new partnerships to survive, a group of high-powered ticket professionals told a packed audience Wednesday at Ticket Summit NYC. During the keynote discussion panel, “Who’s on First? The New Paradigm in the Ticket Marketplace,” executives from major ticket companies made it clear that the broker community, long the second-class citizen of the live entertainment world, had not only arrived but now has a rightful seat at the table. And with the public generally accepting the secondary ticket market, artists, sports teams, venues and primary ticketers should look to partner with brokers to combat the effects of the weak economy. Ticket Summit 2009 panel: Broadway ticket sales and the secondary market

During the first panel session of Ticket Summit 2009 NYC, theatre and ticket industry insiders discussed forging partnerships on Broadway in “Break a Leg! Get in on the Broadway Act.” While the Great White Way has lagged behind the concert and sports industries when it comes to incorporating ticket resale in its business plan, both sides hoped to amend the relationship between theatre’s primary and secondary markets. Producer Ken Davenport, of Davenport Theatrical, noted that a partnership isn’t out of the question. “I watch primary ticket sales, but I wish I had more info from [brokers],” he noted. “Secondary sales are the best gauge of word of mouth [for a show].” Read More

Ticket Summit 2009 kicked off Tuesday evening at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York City and welcomed hundreds of industry experts to the event. In its first year in New York, many eyes are concentrated on one of the cities top attractions, Broadway. NY1, Time Warner’s 24-hour news channel in New York City, reported that the many ticketing organizations attending Ticket Summit are there discussing the ticket trends taking place on Broadway. Jay-Z concert planned in Washington, D.C. to celebrate presidential inauguration

Live Nation is partaking in the inaugural festivities surrounding the January 20 inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States, with a concert by rapper Jay-Z at the 1,847-capacity Warner Theatre in Washington, DC on January 19. Jay-Z, who signed a contract with Live Nation in May, will perform with a full band. Jay-Z has been a strong supporter of Obama’s participating in benefit concerts and registration drives. Following the historic election, he penned a new song, “History,” to commemorate Obama’s win. Tickets for the concert will carry a face value of $375 and $500; a $5 service charged is added to all tickets purchased at the theater’s box office. Read More
MSG Entertainment expands speaker series to Boston and Chicago

Due to the overwhelming success of last year’s inaugural “Speaker Series” that premiered at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, this unique political forum will expand in 2009 to include Boston and Chicago. MSG Entertainment’s “Speaker Series: The Minds That Move The World” will also return to Radio City Music Hall four nights in March-May; the Boston and Chicago line-ups are yet to be released. The four timely evenings are Bill Maher and Ann Coulter on March 9; Anderson Cooper interviewing Arianna Huffington, D.L. Hughley and former Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee on March 31; Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, Alberto Gonzales and John Ashcroft on April 20; and Charlie Rose interviewing James Carville and former Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove on May 26. Des Moines, Iowa considers cracking down on ticket scalping

Government officials in Des Moines, IA have begun looking at creating buffer zones around venues and arenas in the city that would prohibit ticket scalping within 500 feet of the facility. The proposed ordinance would move street scalpers away from the box offices to allow venues a better opportunity to sell tickets. Internet resale remains legal in the state, and the proposal would not change that. Read More
BCS Championship, AFC Playoff tickets help keep Dolphin Stadium #1

According to TicketNews’ exclusive venues rankings for the week ending Saturday, January 3, Dolphin Stadium holds the number one spot for the second week in a row. Bolstered by sales for both the January 4 AFC Wild Card game between the Miami Dolphins and the Baltimore Ravens and the January 8 BCS National Championship Bowl pitting the Florida Gators against the Oklahoma Sooners, the stadium earns an impressive 6.71 power score this week. Moving up four from last week to the number two position is the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. The home of Los Angeles Lakers basketball is also scheduled to host two dates on Britney Spears popular spring tour. The Staples Center power scores a 3.30 this week. The home field of the San Diego Chargers, Qualcomm Stadium, hits at number three this week with a power score of 3.10. Benefiting from strong ticket sales for the Chargers’ January 3 AFC Wild Card match up with the Indianapolis Colts, in the coming weeks the stadium will also host the Monster Jam Trucks tour and AMA Supercross, two events that made the top ten in this week’s TicketNews Top Sports Events rankings. Next on our venues list is the Gershwin Theatre, in at number four this week with a power score of 2.94. Wicked, its long-running, high-grossing musical, keeps this venue a solid top five contender week after week. Read More
Chicago Cubs Spring Training, New York Giants Playoff tickets on sale this week

Tickets for upcoming Chicago Cubs Spring Training games as well as tickets for upcoming play-off appearances from the New York Giants are on sale throughout the week ending January 10 as compiled by TicketNews. The onsales are quite favorable to sports fans this week. On sale Tuesday morning are tickets to the New York Giants’ upcoming play-off game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Tuesday morning also marks an opportunity for fans of the Chicago Cubs to buy tickets to the lovable losers’ Spring Training games held in Mesa, AZ. Wicked, NFL Playoff tickets dominate the top event rankings

TicketNews released its Weekly Top Events rankings for the week ending January 3 and once again Wicked holds on to the number one spot in the Top Combined Events rankings with an 8.37 power score. But with the NFL Playoff kicking off this past week the next three positions went to NFL teams. Jersey Boys rounds out the top five with a 2.29 power score. Britney Spears (2.29) comes in behind the Jersey Boys and Elton John & Billy Joel tickets rank at number eight (2.17) in the Top Combined Events rankings. The Top Concert Events rankings show Nickelback has the third bestselling concert with a 5.28 power score. The Eagles follow with a 4.80 power score, remaining ahead of the number five ranked AC/DC (4.58). Rapper Lil’ Wayne (4.05) comes in at number six, followed by crooner CĂ©line Dion (3.80). Fleetwood Mac (3.08) and Bette Midler (2.86) rank at numbers nine and ten, respectively. Read More
Ticketmaster Entertainment and TicketsNow run into questions in Canada

Ticketmaster Entertainment continues to confront issues in Canada over the company’s relationship with subsidiary TicketsNow. This past summer, the company was criticized in the country over the way Elton John tickets were turning up on TicketsNow, but now a consumer advocate is vowing to turn up the heat and government officials are recommending that future complaints against the ticketing giant be directed to the police.
